Two people have been arrested after viral footage on social media showed a violent brawl had broken out at a popular car festival in Canberra.

A string of fights were caught on camera over the weekend showing fights between car fans and security guards as many were bashed and kicked.

Footage showed what appeared to be bouncers and “crowd safety” security staff in multiple altercations with car fans at Canberra’s Exhibition Park in Canberra.

Two people who attended the festival were arrested as police continued to investigate the incident, according to ACT Police.

“We have had reports of assaults within Summernats itself and we’re currently investigating those, we understand there’s a large amount of information available and evidence on social media which we are pulling together,” Summernats Operational Commander Rod Anderson said in a press conference on Monday.

“We’d ask anyone who has any information to come forward if they haven’t already spoken to police.”

Viral video footage from the event showed guards wearing pink high-vis throwing punches at members of the crowd, with some men falling to the ground.

Shouts erupted from the crowd as onlookers were seen filming the fights which broke out between security staff and revellers.

Mr Anderson said videos of the brawl which had been going viral online were “quite disturbing” but there were “many different angles” to the footage which police would continue examining before taking action.

He added police responded to a number of incidents both inside and outside of the festival in Canberra over the weekend.

Police worked with security to remove certain people and vehicles after chaos ensued at the event, with 13 vehicles seized during the operation.

The investigation is ongoing as police speak to witnesses and work with security to identify what caused the brawl.

About 1,000 personnel and police from both New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory worked with security and event organisers to respond to the incident.

The Summernats festival is an annual four-day car event operating in Canberra since 1987.

Thousands of cars are normally displayed throughout the event, which attracts more than 120,000 car enthusiasts.

In a statement on Sunday, Summernats festival said an investigation into the incident involving security staff and patrons will be given the “highest priority”.

“Summernats and security contractor Red Dawn have already begun an investigation into the incident involving security staff and patrons on Saturday afternoon,” Summernats confirmed.

“Summernats and Red Dawn take their responsibilities for the safety and security of everyone at the event very seriously.

“The investigation will be given the highest priority, with outcomes shared and all learnings implemented. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made by organisers until the investigation is concluded.”
