Ridge’s Aidan Cairns and Somerville’s Joel Tapia went head to head in a pair of wheelchair races on Wednesday at the 2024 NJSIAA Meet of Champions and both of them left Pennsauken with titles.

Tapia started the day with a championship win in the 100 meters with a time of 21.31. Cairns came back later in the afternoon and took gold in the 400 meters with a time of 1:14.93.

“Last time I was here, I completed alone, so it was great to have Joel here this year and have more competition,” said Cairns. “We wanted to show people what people like us can do. We can get out here, have fun and compete just like everyone else.”

In addition to racing in the 100 and 400 meter races, Tapia competed by himself in the 1600 meters. It gave him two wins on the day.

“This feels great,” said Tapia. “When you get ready and you see everybody watching you, it’s amazing. I came here today ready to do my best.”
