Hobart rings in Winter with an edgy, zany festival that’s known for boundary-pushing events and performances. Held in June, this festival is all about embracing darkness, hedonism as well as the local arts and culture scene through art installations, music performances, film screenings and events. Some of the event’s highlights include the Winter Feast where you can indulge in hearty food and drink in the midst of the festival. And if you’re feeling really brave, you can put your name down for the Nude Solstice Swim, where participants take a chilly dip to welcome the return of the light.

After a chilly, dark Winter, Hobart welcomes back the warmer weather with the Taste of Summer festival. An event that celebrates Summer as well as the best food and drink in the Tasmanian culinary scene. Taking place during the festive season from late December to early January, you’ll be treated to dozens of stalls featuring the best fresh seafood, gourmet cheeses, wines, ciders, and craft beers. As well as great food, you’ll have great views, too. The event takes place on Princes Wharf in the Salamanca Place, where you can savour your food with uninterrupted views of the harbour.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is one of the most iconic events in the sailing world, and it all wraps up in Hobart every December. After leaving Sydney on Boxing Day, the yachts make their way to Hobart’s historic waterfront where they’re greeted by a huge celebration that awaits them onshore. With food stalls, live entertainment and more, whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or you love a good party, this is the perfect way to ring in the new year. 

MONA FOMA, which is short for Museum of Old and New Art: Festival of Music and Art, is a Summer festival where you’ll catch a glimpse at some of the best music, art, and theatrical performances across Hobart and Launceston. MONA FOMA takes place every January and brings with it an eclectic lineup of artists from around the world. From live concerts to thought-provoking art installations, this is a true taste of Tasmanian culture.

Every October at the Hobart Showground, the Royal Hobart Show kicks off with livestock competitions, wood-chopping events and plenty of farm animals for the kids to experience.
