Popular event cancelled due to ‘severe weather’

A wild week-long weather pattern that dumped rains across Sydney has forced closures at one of the city’s most popular winter events.

A number of attractions at this year’s Vivid event were cancelled on Saturday due to “severe weather” that lashed the Harbour City.

In a statement, Destination NSW said a number of events were cancelled for Saturday, including the Vivid Light Walk and Tumbalong Nights at Tumbalong Park.

The Vivid Fire Kitchen at The Goods Line and the Lightscape experience at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney were also scuttled by the wild weather.

“Public safety is always Vivid Sydney’s top priority,” the statement said.

“We encourage everyone to keep following our social media updates to keep track of future program changes.”

A number of other attractions were expected to remain open on Saturday despite the rain, including music and food events.

Vivid is one of Sydney’s largest annual events and in 2023 attracted more than 3.4 million, with almost 500,000 in just the opening weekend – a record for the event.

The cancellation comes only a week into this year’s event, with attractions at Sydney Opera House and the Carriagworks among those staying open.

A 5000km cloud band tracking across the country has raised the possibility of a week of wild weather across the country.

The weather pattern is forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology to have brought rain to a whopping 90 per cent of the country by Sunday.

Sydney was forecast for an 100 per cent chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday, with between 3-20mm forecast for the latter.
