Doomben tips and preview for Wednesday: $5.50 best bet

The Winter Carnival is over so we’re back to the off-season horses on Wednesday at Doomben and I am on a few that have been knocking on the door in better company.

With little rain forecast the track should be no worse than a soft (5) and it will pay to be on the speed.

Race 1 – F&M Maiden Plate (1200m)

Plenty of first starters in a field where most have had their share of chances. Chris Munce can get them ready and MADAM BORODINA (8) is out of a handy racemare and producer. She won a recent trial and with Tahlia Fenlon’s 3kg claim can make a strong debut.

Winkers go on CLIODHNA MAEVE (5) which is improving at each outing and didn’t appreciate the Heavy 8 at Eagle Farm but still beat all bar one. She drops back in trip but with Michael Rodd staying on will get every chance.

LADY LUCIFER (7) is poorly drawn but hit the line well at her only outing and the David Vandyke/Ryan Maloney combination can never be ignored.

Tony Gollan has a great record with first starters at the midweeks and POWER ACE (10) won her most recent trial. She may be later and longer but the full sister won at Ipswich last Thursday and that may be an omen.

Verdict – Watching the market on MADAM BORODINA (8).

Race 2 – C,G&E Maiden Plate (1200m)

Tony Gollan has scratched two of his three acceptors and the half-brother to Goodwood Stakes winner Royal Merchant, TURN THE CORNER (12) has had two trials to get ready. Now a gelding he will get every opportunity to show his wares with Ryan Maloney.

The tongue tie comes off SUPERSTITIOUS (11) which has had a change of stable and won a recent trial at Murwillumbah. He has had his chances but brings Sydney form and placed at two of three starts last preparation.

Visors replace blinkers on MYSTIC MAC (9) which has found one better at his past two outings. Melea Castle stays on and he will be around the mark again.

BEANS MEANS (1) is another that has had his opportunities but rarely runs poorly and only just missed at Beaudesert last start. Madeleine Wishart stays on and will be prominent for a long way.

Verdict – Market watch on TURN THE CORNER (12).

****

Race 3 – F&M Class 1 Handicap (1200m)

A touch of class with EMPRESS OF WONDER (1) which is resuming after a change of stables and has been trialling well. She placed in black-type company at her first two outings and wasn’t disgraced in the Magic Millions as a two-year-old. After a long injury break she won her Maiden last start at Newcastle and only has to bring that form to beat these.

MAGIC ISLAND (2) is another resuming after showing Saturday level ability at her first preparation. She has been readied by a quiet trial, has speed and will be prominent for Michael Rodd.

AERIAL BAY (5) has come North to join Tony Gollan and has been readied by a recent trial. A Wangaratta Maiden winner she can show up fresh for Emily Lang.

GURU CLASS (7) finally broke through for her Maiden win after a change of stables and backed it up with a good effort on a heavy track at Murwillumbah. This is harder but she will get all the favours from the ace draw.

Verdict – EMPRESS OF WONDER (1) too classy.

Race 4 – C,G&E Class 1 Handicap (1200m)

An expensive yearling but bought for a bargain price by Jack Bruce at an online sale in November LA FAST TYCOON (4) overcame a wide gate to bolt in on debut at Warwick. He drops 3.5kg and while Maiden to Class 1 often tests may be too classy.

LIMERO (3) resumed well to get the Maiden out of the way at Eagle Farm. He showed promise at earlier preparations, will appreciate the extra distance and won’t be far away in running.

BEAUTANTES (1) will strip fitter after battling on the heavy track when resuming. With Emily Lang’s 3kg claim he can make his presence felt.

RICH AGAIN (5) finds it hard to win but is rarely far away and will get the gun run with Samantha Collett.

Verdict – LA FAST TYCOON (4) better than Class 1.

****

Race 5 – 3YO Maiden Plate (1650m)

A firmer track and this trip can be the making of VICTORY COMMAND (8) which has found one better at his past two outings. With Cody Collis’s 3kg claim he won’t be far away in running and this is his chance to break through.

Winkers go on PRINCESS KAGUYA (12) which is one-paced but suited at the trip and will get all the favours with Jim Orman from the ace.

A bigger track and this trip suits VERMILION KIRIN (7) which has hit the line to just miss at his past two outings at Gatton. Georgina Cartwright gets on and that ensures a positive ride.

MIDORI MOVER (10) drops back to a more suitable trip after being run down over 2040m last start. Samantha Collett replaces Jim Byrne and can overcome the wide gate.

Verdict – VICTORY COMMAND (8) for me.

****

Race 6 – Class 5 Handicap (1350m)

Some solid form lines here but SPACE TRACKER (2) has been consistent this preparation and will enjoy the increase in distance. He makes his own luck and will get every chance with Jag Guthmann-Chester.

DENIED (6) has been up a while but has won four of seven this time in and a mare in form can never be ignored. It took a wide gate and subsequent winner Atlantic Ocean to beat her last start and with Emily Lang staying aboard will be prominent again.

LUBRICATION (3) knows how to put in a bad one but is smart on his day and will get all favours with Ryan Maloney from gate two.

APRIL IN AUGUSTA (8) is fitter for three outings and will appreciate the longer journey. She has speed and Cejay Graham will have her well-placed throughout.

Verdict – Several chances but I am with SPACE TRACKER (2).

****

Race 7 – Benchmark 65 Handicap (1350m)

None of these excite and the one with most upside is GENETIC FREAK (2) which showed the benefit of a change of stable with a bold effort to win over 1200m when resuming on the Gold Coast polytrack. He may need further but is well placed with Emily Lang’s 3kg claim and will get all the favours from the inside gate.

NOTACLUEHOWORWHO (10) did everything but win a Class 2 at Eagle Farm last start. He rises 2.5kg but Nikita Beriman stays on and will have him hitting the line.

DWINDLING SPIRIT (5) has been consistent this preparation and will get the gun run with Samantha Collett from gate three.

ROCKIN’ ARTIE (8) doesn’t win out of turn but only just missed at Gatton and hasn’t been far away at recent outings. This trip suits and with Damien Thornton can make his presence felt.

Verdict – GENETIC FREAK (2) to go back-to-back.

****

Race 8 – Class 2 Handicap (1650m)

Fitter for three outings SINGER SARGENT (6) steps up to his right trip and put the writing on the wall with a strong effort behind the in-form pair Atlantic Ocean and Denied last start. He showed promise last preparation and draws to do no work from the rail.

NEW LEVEL (2) has been consistent all preparation and did everything but hold off Patmos Island last start at Eagle Farm. He won his only previous start over this trip and Ryan Maloney will have him up the front for a long way.

BRASCO (3) steps up to the mile for the first time but has been hitting the line well over shorter trips. With Jim Orman and a good gate he will get every chance to prove his capability.

This trip suits DELORME (12) which was used up mid-race at the Sunshine Coast but boxed on well to just miss a place. Now third-up, she drops 4kg and With Nikita Beriman will be close enough if good enough.

Verdict – SINGER SARGENT (5) to strike.
