5 FREE family-friendly events in the South this month

With the cost-of-living crisis affecting many South Aussies, getting out and about with friends and family can be tough, especially during Mad March!

With Fringe, WOMAD, and Adelaide Festival taking over the city, it can be a nice change to head down south, escape the crowd and soak up the sunshine with the scenic views as a backdrop.

If you’re looking for some fun, immersive and FREE activities to explore this month with the whole family, check out our guide below of five free events happening this month in the Onkaparinga region.

Twilight Food Affair – McLaren Vale

One of the biggest community events in McLaren Vale this year is the Twilight Food Affair, which is held at Tatachilla Lutheran College and has previously attracted a crowd of over 5000 people!

Showcasing some of the best food and wine from the Fleurieu region, there’s also carnival rides, sideshow entertainment, live music and fireworks. The Food Affair will include cuisine from Italy, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, India and Vietnam, as well as favourites like bush burgers, spuds, hot cinnamon donuts and fairy floss, and pop up bar will also be serving up some of McLaren Vale’s favourite brews and vinos for adults to enjoy.

TJS Twilight Markets – Christies Beach

The Twilight Markets in Christies Beach run fortnightly on Fridays from 5-9 pm, overlooking the beach in Rotary Park. With market stalls featuring everything from homewares, fashion, jewellery and more, there’s also live music, a stack of food vendors and a playground and grassed park area to keep the kids entertained.

With one Twilight Market session left this season, make sure you head down and make a night of it!

Move It Come and Try Social Tennis – Christies Downs

If you’ve always wanted to channel your inner Federer or Serena, head to Christies Downs for a social tennis event hosted by Move It and Rally4Ever. Happening every Friday from 1:30-2:30 pm, it’s the perfect activity if you’ve never tried tennis before or wanna sharpen your skills.

With friendly volunteer coaches and all equipment provided, just bring yourself to this welcoming and inclusive event that promises a fun, interactive afternoon for all involved!

Smart Shopper Tours – Seaford

Need some inspiration to get back in the kitchen post all your Summer nights out? Struggling to tick everything off your shopping list within a budget? On Wednesday the 13th and Thursday the 14th March, and again on Thursday the 4th and Wednesday the 10th of April, Drakes Supermarket at Seaford Central Shopping Centre, will play host to a Smart Shopper Tours, in partnership with Anglicare SA and Communities for Children Onkapringa.

In every 2 hours session, you’ll learn the skills to shop and cook with healthier, less expensive foods, understand how to read food labels, discover how to shop the best with each season, and also make savings for your family and buy for better value. Each participant will receive a $15 Drakes voucher to spend at the workshop and the tour will finish at the Seaford Library with a recipe development lesson.

Diana Lee Paws a While – Port Noarlunga

Artist Diana Lee presents an exhibition of pet portraits at the Red Rover Gallery in Port Noarlunga, running from Friday the 15th of March to Monday the 29th of April. Featuring cats, dogs and horse portraits that use both pastel and coloured pencils each piece of art is created with a focus on intricate detail and with a realistic style, making every portrait come to life!

If you’re a pet lover and appreciate the creative arts, head down to Port Noarlunga for an afternoon of pooches, felines and stallions.
