Haig Park Turns 101

Haig Park is turning 101 and they’re hosting an amazing party in the park! Luna New Year in Woolley Street

Canberra’s unofficial Chinatown is getting ready to come to life with a massive celebration this year – and it’s perfect for the whole family.

From Chinese Classical dance workshops to roving Kung Fu Performances, a calligraphy workshop, traditional Chinese classical music, a performance from Prosperous Mountain Lion Dance, and more, the day is overflowing with things to do and see. Lifeline Canberra Epic February Bookfair

Calling all booklovers! Your favourite event is back with a bang. Raising a major portion of the funding needed to keep local mental health crisis support services running, at the Lifeline Canberra Bookfair you’ll find  a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, maps, records, jigsaws and more. Belco Bowl Jam

A world class skateboarding event in Canberra? We’ll be there. The Belco Bowl Jam is Australia’s most popular skateboarding competition, which attracts some of the best skateboarders from around the world (including multiple Olympians from various countries). Completely not-for-profit and organised by a team of local volunteers who are passionate about skateboarding, this competition is supported by Events ACT.

This will be a weekend of everything psychic, spiritual and wellbeing. Akram Khan Company’s Jungle Book reimagined

This is an absolute coup for Canberra – The Jungle Book reimagined’s only East Coast performances will take place at Canberra Theatre Centre.

In this show, Akram Khan – one of the world’s leading choreographers – has created this magical dance retelling of the classic tale, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. See the journey of Mowgli, reimagined through the eyes of a refugee caught in a world devastated by the impact of climate change.

Alpha’s Driveway Cookout

New Orleans Jazz Concert In The Courtyard

The Golden Cord (1996)

Directed by Hilary Furlong, The Golden Cord tells the story of ten women artists from Urapuntja/Utopia, Central Australia, who travel to the Brahma Tirta Sari batik studio in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Shown at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in partnership by the National Gallery of Australia, this film screening is part of a series of public programs focused on batik in the practice of senior Anmatyerr artist Emily Kam Kngwarray.

BLANK by Nassim Soleimanpour 

Reversing the typical theatre experience, in this unique show the audience will help the performers to fill gaps in the script to reveal a story that celebrates the human imagination.

Each night, a different performer in BLANK will involve a new audience member to fill in the blanks and complete the story. Known for creating plays without directors, sets and rehearsals, you can expect this show by Soleimanpour to be both fun and empowering.

This year, the National Film and Sound Archive is celebrating the Lunar New Year with a curated selection of films featuring Mandarin language. Taking place from Wednesday 7 until Saturday 10 February, from Tang dynasty China to modern-day New York, the films will explore family ties, complex relationships, and a shared connection to the Mandarin language.

Queers

Curated by Mark Gatiss and directed by Steph Roberts and Jarrad West, the critically acclaimed production Queers is coming to ACT Hub this summer. Next To Normal

Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards (including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize), the Queanbeyan Players are presenting their February 2024 production of Next to Normal – and it sounds amazing. Exploring how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness, Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.

This show looks like an hour of madcap mayhem – perfect for comedy lovers. The Favourite

A Sun Dance

This  is a new performance commission by artist Rochelle Haley. At the core of the work is a relationship between dancer, sunlight and architecture, conceived in relation to the architecture of the original National Gallery building. The performance, developed over different seasons, draws influence from the feel of sun on skin and architect Col Madigan’s observation of light ‘dancing’ through the gallery.

The score features iconic works by composers including Bach and Ravel, music by Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead, and new original music by Richard Tognetti and peerless Indigenous composer William Barton. The soundtrack won ARIA and AACTA awards. Performed live by Richard Tognetti and the ACO, alongside Jennifer Peedom’s astonishing visuals, expect a beautiful and powerful show.

Art Lab: Live Coding Music

Art Labs are artist-led workshops connecting young audiences nationally with artists, artmaking and the national collection. Interwoven 7

Interwoven 7 brings together basketry and textile artists from the Canberra region and the NSW South Coast. Using a range of fibre traditions, combining natural, synthetic and recycled materials, artworks have been created using twining, coiling, looping, stitching and assemblage to reinterpret fibre art from functional vessels to sculptural forms. Born of an idea by artist Gabrielle Powell, this is a beautiful fusion of traditional and experimental works.

Lines Of Sight by Patsy Payne and John Pratt

Lines of Sight by Patsy Payne and John Pratt is the outcome of three years worth of phone conversations and postcard dialogues mostly at a distance of 1,100 kilometres between Darkinjung and Ngunnawal country. The focus of this exchange is a particular zone of the environment between Gulaga and the ocean on the rugged south coast of NSW, in Yuin country.

Valda Johnson; Meandering Around the Murry

This is  a free monthly program for individuals who identify as neurodivergent including, but not limited to, those who experience Autism, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Tourette Syndrome. It offers an inclusive and creative opportunity to spend time engaging in relaxed conversation and participating in artmaking.

Meet The Author: Lisa Millar

In this special event narrator Lisa Millar will be in conversation with James Glenday to discuss her new book about the show – because it quite literally changed her life. In her new book, Lisa tells us about her journey over two seasons, bringing us up to date with the characters of series one – human and canine – and introducing us to five new collie pups, trainers and the hurdles of season two.

Film Developing and Scanning Workshop

This is a quick and easy way to learn how to develop your own black and white 35mm film or 120 film. In this workshop, you’ll be guided through the process of developing your own 35mm or 120 black and white film in the PhotoAccess film developing room. You’ll also be give a detailed demonstration of how to scan your negatives using the PhotoAccess Digital Suite and you’ll also receive a complimentary roll of film so you are ready to go after the workshop. Once you have completed the class and as a PhotoAccess member, you can access the digital scanning suite and film developing room free of charge!

David Greenhalgh On Surrealism

Specially designed for carers and their babies (with tactile objects available to help keep babies engaged during the floor talk), this talk see’s David Greenhalgh (Kenneth E Tyler Assistant Curator, International Prints & Drawing) explore the Surrealist works of art in the national collection, such as René Magritte’s Les Amants [The lovers] 1928 and Hannah Höch’s Imaginäre Brücke [Imaginary bridge] 1926, and the ideas explored by this art movement. This is a free talk, breastfeeding is welcomed and bookings are essential.

Art Kintsugi Workshop

Hosted by Yoko Kawada, this workshop explores the centuries-old Japanese craftwork where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using Urushi lacquer and gold dust. Based on the philosophy of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection) you will learn the introductory technique of Art Kintsugi method, following seven essential steps using modern accessible materials (such as epoxy and gold metal) to understand the repair process and create an original piece of Kintsugi art to take home.

Art Talk: Anne O’Hehir and Shaune Lakin On 1970s Video Art

Here photography curators Shaune Lakin and Anne O’Hehir are hosting a free talk focused on performance within the 1970s video art of Cuban-American artist, Ana Mendieta and American artist, Lynda Benglis. Focusing on Mendieta’s, Blood sign (1974) and Lynda Benglis’s Female sensibility (1973) currently on display as part of the exhibition, Deep Inside My Heart, the talk will explore how Mendieta and Benglis used performance and their own bodies to assert their politics, gender and sexuality.

A Floral Design Workshop with Miss Moss

Artists In The Archives; Rochelle Haley On A Sun Dance

Rochelle Haley will talk about the development of A Sun Dance, a new performance commission that explores the relationship between dancer, sunlight and architecture. In this free talk, Haley will share how the papers of architect Col Madigan, held in the National Gallery’s archives, inspired painterly and choreographic responses in the development of A Sun Dance.
