Greater Geelong swells with mass events over long weekend – K ROCK 95.5

Thousands of cycling fans are descending on Geelong and the Surf Coast for the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

The People’s Ride is underway ahead of the women’s elite event kicking off later on Saturday at 12:35pm.

The road race brings together close to 200 of the world’s best mens and women cyclists, with the pinnacle 113 kilometre Cadel Classic incorporating Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast.

Its one of two major events in Geelong across the long weekend, with the 181st running of the Festival of Sails out of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

Cycling will conclude tomorrow, with the elite men’s leg of the Cadel Even’s race starting at 11:10am, with an estimated return arrival time of 3:16pm.

The Department of Transport’s Lui Zacher says the regions main roads will stay open for holiday makers, including Latrobe Terrace and the Geelong Ring Road, but is warning motorists to be aware there are significant interruptions elsewhere.

Geelong police are urging patience from drivers during the delays, and warn they’ll be out in force for people caught breaking the rules.

“Show a bit of respect to each other, and make sure everyone is safe and look after each other,” Acting Superintendent Peter Nichols said.
