Learn how to support and engage with local events in Geelong through the Geelong Times.

Enjoying the Summer Vibes in Geelong

As the summer season kicks into full swing, Geelong is buzzing with activity. The warm weather has brought crowds to our beautiful coast, filling up our eateries and making parking a precious commodity. It’s a busy time of year, and it’s a reminder of how much we appreciate the little things like finding a table without a reservation or snagging a convenient parking spot.

A Popular Holiday Destination

According to council data, over 400,000 people have stayed in Greater Geelong and the Bellarine during this peak holiday period. The population of the Bellarine more than doubles to about 127,000, with visitors spread across the region in various accommodations. The recent opening of the Holiday Inn & Suites Geelong and Quest Central Geelong has attracted more visitors to stay in the heart of the city. And in two years, the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre will add another 200 hotel rooms on the Waterfront.

A Diverse Events Calendar

One of the many attractions of this region is its diverse events calendar. From showcasing quality local produce to hosting great music and art, high-class sports and recreation, and fostering a strong community spirit, these events truly highlight what sets us apart. The council takes pride in supporting a wide range of events, from international competitions to grassroots activities. This support comes in the form of grants and direct sponsorships.

Boosting the Local Economy

The economic impact of these events is significant. In 2022-23 alone, Geelong Major Events provided financial and in-kind sponsorships totaling $1.64 million to 18 events. These events generated over $81 million in expenditure and supported an estimated 650 full-time jobs in our region. More than half of these events offered free public access, attracting over 757,000 spectators and participants.

Exciting Times Ahead

As the chair of the Geelong Major Events Designated Committee, I am thrilled about the upcoming events this summer. From the Geelong Beer Festival to the Festival of Sails and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, there is no shortage of memorable experiences for both residents and visitors. These events not only provide entertainment but also bring a significant boost to our tourism and hospitality sectors, helping local businesses thrive throughout the year.

Continuing to Thrive as a Destination

With the region’s visitor economy projected to be worth up to $2.1 billion annually over the next decade, it is crucial that we continue to support and enhance our events calendar. By doing so, we ensure that Geelong remains an attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Quote from Cr Anthony Aitken, Deputy Mayor, City of Greater Geelong:

“Geelong’s vibrant events calendar showcases the best of our region and brings our community together. It’s a testament to our unique offerings and the hard work of everyone involved in organizing these events. Let’s make the most of this summer and enjoy all that Geelong has to offer!”

Conclusion

Geelong is alive with summer festivities, drawing crowds from near and far. With a packed events calendar and a thriving visitor economy, there is no better time to experience the vibrant spirit of this coastal city. So grab your friends, soak up the sunshine, and make lasting memories in Geelong!
