SUSTAINABILITY Victoria and local councils are urging residents not to dispose of toxic chemicals in their kerbside bins or down the drain.

Instead residents are invited to get rid of items like weed killer, cleaning products, old cooking oil, and cosmetics at no cost at the upcoming Detox Your Home event in Point Henry.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said toxic chemicals should never be disposed of in rubbish bins, poured down the drain or left out for hard rubbish collection.

“These chemicals cannot be accepted at our waste facilities due to the risk of fire or explosion.

“Detox your Home is able to accept toxic chemicals and is run by specialists.

“This is a great way to safely clean out the garage, laundry or under the kitchen sink.”

The events are managed by trained specialist chemists and have the proper licensing to handle toxic substances safely.

With about 40 pop-up events held across Victoria annually, households from any location can participate in these crucial environmental initiatives.

Environment and circular economy portfolio chair Cr Peter Murrihy encouraged the community to gain a better understanding of the importance of proper hazardous waste disposal for the well-being of our community and environment.

“By offering this free service to residents, we aim to encourage responsible chemical waste management, safeguarding our surroundings from potential harm,” he said.

The next Detox Your Home event in the Geelong area will take place at the Point Henry Resource Recovery & Transfer Station, 42-50 Point Henry Road, Moolap on March 2, from 8am-1pm.
