In Queensland, 66% of adults and 25% of children are overweight or obese. ‘Walkability’ is the basis of a sustainable city and provides many social and health benefits at an individual, community and population level.

Queensland Health’s ‘Healthy Places, Healthy People’ (HPHP) evidence-informed frameworks guide how the State’s built and natural environments can support community health outcomes. Through cross-government engagement, Queensland Health and the Office of the Queensland Government Architect are committed to supporting highly walkable and shaded environments across Queensland’s regions.

The seminar will provide:

  • an overview of the HPHP Framework
  •  how the framework identified a policy gap in skin cancer risk
  •  initiated research and the translation of that into a practical resource tool to inform and guide implementation that optimises tree planting outcomes.
  • demonstration of the CanopyCast digital tool that analyses UV index reduction and shade provided by trees.

The HPHP evidence-based approach piloted at Ipswich Central helps to understand environmental factors that influence walking and prioritise infrastructure delivery to support the multiple benefits resulting from increased activity within regional centres.
