Recognizing Invasion Day: A Day of Mourning for First Nations People
January 26th, known as Invasion Day or Survival Day, is a day of mourning for First Nations people in Australia. It marks the day in 1788 when the British Military declared their invasive rule, falsely claiming the land as ‘terra nullius’.
At Friends of the Earth, we acknowledge that the sovereignty over Australia has never been ceded by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This land always has been and always will be Aboriginal land. We are committed to fighting for environmental justice on stolen land and recognize that all forms of justice are interconnected, including climate justice and First Nations justice.
We also understand that all forms of colonialism and oppression are linked. We stand in solidarity with Palestine, First Nations peoples of Australia, and all oppressed Indigenous peoples.
Invasion Day Rallies Across the Continent
Below are some rallies and events happening across the continent where First Nations people and allies are invited to join in resistance against systemic racism, deaths in custody, and the colonial project. Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic, it is important to prioritize COVID-19 safety measures when attending any events.
