Surfing State of Origin: Queensland and New South Wales Battle for the Title

Get ready for an epic showdown as the Queensland and New South Wales Boardrider Clubs (BRC) go head-to-head in the Surfing State of Origin. This unprecedented event, taking place on Sunday, April 30th at Burleigh Heads, will determine the champion surfing State.

A Celebration of Club Surfing

The Surfing State of Origin is a first-of-its-kind, invitation-only event that brings together 16 BRCs. The top eight clubs from Queensland and New South Wales will showcase their talent in what promises to be Australian sport’s greatest rivalry.

Adam Yates, CEO of Surfing Queensland, acknowledges the friendly rivalry between the two states and expects a fierce competition among some of Australia’s best surfers. He emphasizes the importance of club surfing in breeding competitive surfers and fostering camaraderie in an individual sport.

Surfing NSW CEO, Luke Madden, shares the excitement and passion behind the Surfing State of Origin. He believes this event celebrates the grassroots of surfing and will ignite a strong sense of regional pride and loyalty among competitors and fans alike.

An Iconic Location

The Surfing State of Origin will take place at Burleigh Heads, the birthplace of modern professional surfing. This iconic location holds historical significance as it hosted the 1977 Stubbies Surf Classic, which introduced the ‘man-on-man’ competition format that has shaped professional surfing today.

Burleigh Hill provides a natural amphitheater for spectators to witness the surfing action. Additionally, a pop-up beach bar will be available for the ultimate Sunday Session during the Labour Day long weekend.

The Battle Begins

The 16 participating BRCs will be selected based on the 2022/23 Australian Boardriders Battle results. Surfing Queensland and Surfing NSW will each enter a wildcard club. Four members from each BRC will compete in their respective divisions, with only the best surfers in the Open Male, Open Female, Master, and Junior categories representing their state in the State of Origin Final. This final event will determine the overall champion State.

The Surfing State of Origin is proudly supported by Surfing Queensland, DriTimes, We Are Feel Good Inc, QMS Media, and the Queensland Government.
