As South Australia officially heads into Mad March, there’s a stack of events, festivals, performances and more happening all over the state!

The Adelaide Fringe is still kickin’ on strong, celebrating arts and culture from across the globe, and we’re about to welcome the Adelaide Festival and the globally celebrated WOMADelaide for 2024.

Adelaide Fringe | 16 February – 17 March

The Adelaide Fringe is still kickin’ on this March, showcasing over 1,300 shows in a vibrant celebration of arts and culture. Known for its eclectic mix of comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret, visual art, music, and interactive experiences, the festival promises to be a kaleidoscope of talent and creativity.

This year’s program marks a significant uptick in international participation, with 23% of the shows hailing from abroad, highlighting Adelaide Fringe’s growing global appeal. The Garden of Unearthly Delights, Gluttony and Fool’s Paradise are all popular city hotspots during the festival season and feature a smorgasbord of delicious food and drink options and entertainment, making Fringe a buzzing atmosphere for the whole family.

The 39th edition of the Adelaide Festival kicks off in March and promises a calendar of activity with 64 scheduled events, including 16 world premieres, 12 Australian premieres, and 23 exclusives.

The festival, renowned for its commitment to artistic excellence, will showcase a blend of international and local talents. Notable international stars such as Robert Lepage, Laurie Andersen, and Angélique Kidjo will grace the festival while emerging talents like Mario Banushi and Thomas Weatherall will make their debut.

A significant highlight of the festival is its focus on First Nations artists, with approximately 77 First Nations artists participating in 10 different works, and climate action and environmental concerns are alsocentral themes of the 2024 program.

The charming town of Beachport is gearing up to host the second edition of the Beachport Crayfish Festival. This vibrant celebration of coastal wonders promises visitors an extraordinary day filled with great food, family-friendly festivities, and a showcase of the region’s unique offerings.

Organised by the community for the community, this festival not only highlights the region’s produce and dishes but also pays tribute to the hardworking crayfishers who contribute to Beachport’s rich heritage, with 18 crayboats operating out of the port, creating a great scene for the festival.

Discover the diverse and close-knit community of Beachport, where the festival caters to attendees of all ages. From engaging games to live musical performances by artists like Victoria Meyer, The Christy Wallace Trio, JB (Jason Baker), Leah Briggs with Andrew Clermont’s Supper Club, and Suburban Henry, the festival promises a day filled with laughter, music, and entertainment.

WOMADelaide, the globally celebrated music, arts, and dance festival, returns to Adelaide’s Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla with an enriching and diverse lineup this March and is a celebration of diverse cultures and sounds, offering attendees a chance to experience a global musical journey in the heart of the city.

With an eclectic schedule of artists, including notable names like Ziggy Marley, Baaba Maal, Corinne Bailey Rae, Nitin Sawhney, and Emel Mathlouthi, this year’s program features an impressive 71 groups, with the festival is shaping up to be a must-attend event for music lovers.

There’s also the return of the KidZone for festivalgoers under 12 years of age, offering a world of fun, creativity, and cultural exploration with an exciting blend of storytelling, music, dance, and educational adventures.

International Women’s Day | 8 March

There are exciting events to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) this year, all held by various local businesses with incredible hosts and guest speakers. IWD is held on the 8th of March, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements and work of women worldwide and recognise the need for global gender equality.

The Great Aussie G&T Off | 10 March

Acclaimed British-Australian actress and storyteller, Miriam Margolyes is bringing her much-anticipated live stage show to the Festival Theatre on March 20th.

In a whirlwind tour spanning across Australia and New Zealand, Margolyes is set to regale audiences with tales from her extraordinary life and illustrious career. Aptly titled “Oh Miriam!”, the show promises to be an evening of laughter, revelation, and heartfelt storytelling.

The irrepressible Margolyes, known for her iconic roles in TV and film, including the Harry Potter series, will take audiences on a journey through her life, sharing juicy anecdotes and never-before-heard stories. With her trademark wit and charm, Margolyes promises an evening that is as hilarious as it is moving.

Presented by MSC Cruises, the 35th edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival (AF FFF), in collaboration with the French Embassy, is set to captivate audiences across South Australia from March 21st to April 16th at Palace Nova Eastend and Prospect Cinemas in Adelaide.

Additional screenings will take place in Renmark from March 22nd to April 6th at the Chaffey Theatre, in Victor Harbour from April 4th to April 10th at the Victa Cinema, and in Mt Gambier from April 17th to April 21st at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.

This year’s program places a spotlight on contemporary creation, emphasising emerging talents and innovative voices shaping the French cinematic landscape. The festival’s whirlwind program includes 41 films, featuring some of the greatest directors and biggest stars of French cinema.

Australia’s beloved RED HOT SUMMER TOUR is back with a bang for its 2024 season, and it’s set to be hotter than ever! The iconic outdoor festival series is gearing up to sweep across various locations in the country, and this Summer, it boasts a stellar lineup that promises to rock the nation. With a career spanning over six decades, international superstar Sir Tom Jones returns to Australia this March for his first national tour in the country since his sold-out performances in 2016, performing at The Drive on Tuesday, 26th March.

Jones’ illustrious career boasts over 100 million records sold, establishing him as one of the greatest singers and recording artists ever, with The New York Times describing him as a “musical shapeshifter who could slide from soulful rasp to pop croon, with a voice as husky as it was pretty”.

Kickstarting a successful and diverse career in the early ’60s and achieving international fame with his powerful voice and stage presence, he has had a string of hit songs, including “It’s Not Unusual”, “What’s New Pussycat?”, “Delilah”, James Bond theme “Thunderball”, “Green, Green Grass of Home”, “She’s A Lady”, “Sex Bomb” and a cover of Prince’s “Kiss”. 

Supporting Jones on this tour will be the Adelaide-based band Germein.
