Richard Flanagan’s chain of events – ABC listen

Richard Flanagan grew up in a small mining town on the west coast of Tasmania, with his much-loved mother Helen and his father Arch, who had survived enslavement as a Japanese prisoner of war.

It was there in Tasmania’s wild, rugged west that Richard experienced the most pivotal event of his young life.

He became stranded in his kayak on a rock ledge in an isolated stretch of the Franklin River.

Richard was trapped for hours, barely able to breathe as river water pounded over his head.

After he was finally rescued, Richard felt like a completely changed young man and has never felt the same since.
