Newcastle Writers Festival program features 150 writers across 95 events

The 2024 Newcastle Writers Festival program is stacked! The much-loved literary event will make a triumphant return this April with its largest program yet.

Boasting an impressive lineup of 150 guest artists who will feature at 95 events across Newcastle’s Civic precinct, Cessnock, and, for the first time, Port Stephens.

Under the guidance of founding director Rosemarie Milsom and program manager (and Secret Book Stuff legend) Amy Lovat, the festival promises an exciting and diverse program that caters to all literary tastes.

“Amy’s passion for books and her extensive publishing connections shine through,” Rosemarie said.

“It is an exciting, diverse program that includes Australia’s most respected writers as well as a strong lineup of debut writers. Amy has done a brilliant job.”

Local, and visiting, bookworms can expect a wide range of activities, including workshops, book launches, readings, panel discussions, one-on-one interviews, a literary trivia event, and a special program at the University of Newcastle’s Wollotuka Institute. And, following its successful debut last year, Words & Music will return to the Conservatorium of Music as part of the festival.

Family-friendly events also feature heavily in the program and feature local talent such as Dan Marshall, Sara Acton, Katrina McKelvey, and Liz Anelli.

The festival’s opening night will feature a special appearance by respected ABC journalist Leigh Sales, who will discuss the art and craft of journalism with Indira Naidoo. Other notable journalists in the lineup include Daniel Browning, Julia Baird, Antony Loewenstein, David Marr, Louise Milligan, and Hedley Thomas.

Celebrity guests presenting their recent books include actors Bryan Brown and Pia Miranda, Midnight Oil musician Jim Moginie, Wendy Harmer and Richard Glover.

The festival will also feature an impressive lineup of First Nations writers, literary heavyweights, and debut authors, offering something for every literary enthusiast.

The 2024 Newcastle Writers Festival will take over the city from the 5th until the 7th of April. The full program is available now at newcastlewritersfestival.org.au.
