Join the 10th Anniversary of Clean Up For The Hatchlings Event

Are you passionate about protecting our beautiful Sunshine Coast beaches and wildlife? Then mark your calendars for Saturday, February 3, as we celebrate a decade of making a difference for turtle hatchlings. This annual event, organized by Sunshine Coast Council, Reef Check Australia, Unitywater, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium, and Noosa Council, has already removed over 250,000 pieces of litter from our beaches during critical turtle nesting season.

Founder Jodi Salmond from Reef Check Australia reflects on the event’s success: “Ten years is a lifetime for any program to survive, but the Clean Up For The Hatchlings event continues to thrive year after year. This achievement is one to be celebrated – it is a testament to the ongoing passion and dedication of the wider Sunshine Coast community to look after our coast and wildlife above and below the surface of the water.”

How You Can Help

Volunteers can register now to participate in the beach clean-up from 6am to 7.30am at various locations between Noosa and Caloundra. Afterward, join us at Coopers Lookout Park, south of the Kawana Surf Club, for a free barbecue, prize draw, fun activities, and the opportunity to weigh and sort the collected debris. Remember to bring a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, gloves, enclosed footwear, and sun protection as the event will be single-use plastic-free.

Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox emphasizes the importance of community involvement: “We are a turtle-friendly community on the Sunshine Coast, and this is our chance to make a difference to our threatened turtle hatchlings. Cleaning up the beaches will give these little hatchlings the best start in life.”
