The World Triathlon Championship Finals Return to Australia in 2025

The coastal city of Wollongong has been selected as the host for the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals. AusTriathlon, in collaboration with the New South Wales Government and Wollongong City Council, has formed a three-year partnership to bring this prestigious event to Australia.

The Championship Finals are considered the highlight of World Triathlon’s annual calendar, attracting over 4,000 athletes, along with their families and friends, from around the world. The previous edition, held in Spain, saw participants from 32 countries, and World Triathlon anticipates even greater participation in the upcoming editions.

Wollongong, located just an hour’s drive south of Sydney, will witness the crowning of world champions in various categories, including Elite, U23, Junior, and Para triathlon. The event will also feature the Mixed Relay World Championships for U23/Juniors and Para triathlon, as well as Age-Group Standard distance, Age-Group Sprint distance, Age-Group Aquabike Standard distance, and Age-Group Mixed Relay World Championships.

Notable cities like London, Budapest, Beijing, Auckland, Chicago, Gold Coast, Lausanne, Edmonton, Abu Dhabi, Pontevedra, and Malaga have previously hosted the Championship Finals. As part of the agreement, Wollongong will not only host the 2025 finals but also two other major World Triathlon events: the 2024 World Triathlon Cup and an additional event in 2026. Additionally, AusTriathlon’s Australian Standard Distance Championships for Age Group, Junior Sprint, and Para and Intellectual Impairment Championships will take place in Wollongong.

World Triathlon President and IOC Member Marisol Casado expressed her excitement about returning to Australia, stating, “Australia has proved multiple times that they are truly committed to our sport and deliver excellent events; and indeed Wollongong will follow in the steps of other events that have marked the history of World Triathlon. With the breathtaking landscapes of Wollongong, triathletes from all over the world, and of course their friends and relatives, will be able to experience another truly remarkable and unforgettable celebration of our sport.”

AusTriathlon CEO Tim Harradine also shared his enthusiasm, saying, “Bringing these three marquee international events to our shores is a great opportunity for AusTriathlon and our community, as we continue to build on the green and gold runway to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
