Discovering Serenity on the Greek Island of Rhodes

Discovering the Hidden Gems of Rhodes

Lunchtime in Apollona, a small village nestled in the khaki-tinged hinterland of Rhodes, is a serene affair. The only sound that breaks the tranquility is the chatter of locals and visitors gathered on a terrace above the houses. Wooden tables are adorned with carafes of wine, platters of roasted meats, and feta-freckled salads, accompanied by bowls of homemade bread. Giannis, the owner and creator of the taverna Paraga, bustles around in his apron, sharing stories and pouring wine sourced from friends’ vineyards on the island. His passion for Rhodes’ rich foodie heritage is evident in every dish he serves.

A Taste of Tradition

At Paraga, lunch begins with three types of bread and a delectable aubergine dip. Many of the recipes have been passed down through generations, preserving the authentic flavors of Rhodes. The main course, a rich beef stifado, is cooked in clay pots since the morning, creating a theatrical moment when Giannis cracks open the pot to reveal a succulent stew. The meal is accompanied by stock-soaked potatoes, creating a truly indulgent dining experience. As you savor each bite, you can gaze out over the lush green hills, olive groves, and vineyards that surround the village.

Exploring the Inland Villages

Apollona is just one of the many villages scattered throughout the hills and valleys of inland Rhodes. These hidden gems are connected by walking trails and offer traditional tavernas and peaceful village bars. Spring is the perfect time to visit, as you can spend your days exploring and walking without the scorching heat. These villages provide a glimpse of a different side of Rhodes, away from the bustling coastline.

During our stay, we chose the newly opened Elissa as our base. This sleek, minimalist-designed hotel sits on the beautiful Kallithea beach, just a short drive from Rhodes town. While Kallithea itself may feel a bit faded, a recommendation from the concierge led us to the charming village of Koskinou, a few kilometers inland.

A Different Side of Rhodes

Rhodes surprises visitors with its diverse landscapes. Just minutes away from the coast, the atmosphere changes dramatically. In Koskinou’s picturesque main square, a small café buzzes with locals sipping coffee while children play football nearby. Whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea line the cobbled alleyways, creating a charming ambiance. It’s hard to believe that the bustling coast is just a short drive away. As we indulge in plates of smoky chicken, garlicky tzatziki, and honey-drenched baklava, it feels like we’ve entered a different world.

The following day, we set out to explore Rhodes’ famous sights, including the Roman streets of Rhodes old town and the historic fortress. These attractions are popular with tourists, so we find solace by returning to the peaceful oasis of Elissa’s tranquil pool.

Later, as we enjoy cold Mythos beers, we plan our route for the next day, which includes several inland villages on our way to our second hotel near Lindos.

Driving in Rhodes is a breeze, with quiet roads designed to accommodate day-trip coaches and Jeep safaris. Along the way, we encounter numerous religious buildings that offer glimpses into the island’s tempestuous history. From mosques to churches, each structure tells a story of Rhodes’ Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, or Italian past. We make a stop at Tsambika, a tiny Byzantine monastery perched at an altitude of 240m. Climbing the 350 steps may be challenging, but the breathtaking 360-degree view of crystalline beaches and lush green landscapes makes it all worthwhile.

Unveiling the South

The southern part of Rhodes offers a different experience from the north. The sprawling resort hotels gradually give way to the stunning Vlycha Bay, with its long arc of beach. Our second hotel, Lindos Blu, is an architectural masterpiece, with rooms and terraces cascading down the hillside. From our vantage point, we admire the jagged mountains that loom across the bay, resembling sleeping alligators partially submerged in the sea.

While the historic town of Lindos is a popular attraction, we find solace in the isolated village of Embonas, known as the most traditional on the island. Though slightly touristy, it still exudes an authentic charm with its wine caves, tavernas, and shops selling locally made crafts. On our way back, we make a short detour to the small resort of Pefkos to enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Lee Beach.

A Tranquil Farewell

On our final day, we make time for one last village visit and enjoy an early lunch in Lardos, just a few minutes’ drive from our hotel. Similar to Koskinou, Lardos offers a peaceful charm that the Greek islands are known for. We soak in the relaxed atmosphere of the leafy main street, cherishing the slow-paced beauty that defines this historic island. As we reflect on our journey, we realize that it’s in these quiet inland villages where the heart of Rhodes truly beats.
