Insights from Travel Experts: The Travel Trend Report 2022, Part One

Travel Trends in 2022: How the Pandemic Has Shaped the Way We Travel

Over the past 18 months, the travel industry has undergone significant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we look ahead to 2022, it’s important to consider how our post-pandemic mindset will impact our travel choices. To gain insights into these trends, I spoke with industry experts to understand the evolving landscape of travel.

A New Focus on Caring

In Hilton’s recent travel trends report, titled “The 2022 Traveler: Emerging Trends and the Redefined Traveler,” the hotel brand explores the impact of COVID-19 on travel. The report highlights various ways in which travel has transformed, from enhanced cleanliness protocols to contactless experiences. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on holistic wellness solutions and more comfortable and approachable travel and dining experiences. Travelers are opting for a more relaxed approach, leaving their formal attire at home.

One notable trend identified in the report is the increased awareness of the environment and our impact on local communities. Travelers are now more concerned about sustainability and community efforts, seeking out brands and organizations that align with their values.

Erica Gordon, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Public Affairs and ESG at Hilton, emphasizes their commitment to protecting local communities and the planet through their “Travel with Purpose” initiative. Hilton has set ambitious goals for 2030, aiming to double their investment in social impact and reduce their environmental footprint by half.

Hilton’s properties have also implemented initiatives that align with sustainable practices. For example, Hilton London Bankside offers a vegan suite, while Hilton Brisbane has established partnerships to manage waste streams. Hilton Garden Inn Faroe Islands embraces the archipelago’s sustainable tourism strategy, featuring a green roof for energy efficiency and blending harmoniously with the local environment.

On the Right Track

Audley Travel, based on research from its clients, has identified several travel trends for 2022. One significant growth area is the interest in train travel, with 81% of surveyed individuals considering rail travel for their next trip. Luxury rail experiences are gaining popularity, offering unique and scenic journeys.

New opportunities for luxury rail travel include Vietnam’s Vietage train, Belmond’s Orient Express expansion to Florence and Rome, and the Rocky Mountaineer’s two-day routing from Denver to Moab, providing breathtaking views through oversized glass-dome windows.

In Russia, bookings for the luxury Golden Eagle train along the Trans-Siberian Railway have already quadrupled before the pandemic. The train’s off-the-beaten-track route and luxurious experience continue to attract strong interest for 2022.

Travel Less, Travel Better

Original Travel has launched its “Travel Less, Travel Better” collection of itineraries, reflecting a new approach to travel. The company focuses on philanthropic holidays, responsible travel, slow travel, rail and road trips, and sabbatical itineraries. These offerings are shaped by extensive research conducted among their current client base.

Founder Tom Barber explains that “Travel Less, Travel Better” doesn’t imply a decline in the tourism sector but rather a shift towards longer, well-planned, and more meaningful trips. Original Travel aims to provide exceptional experiences by leveraging their destination expertise and investing in research trips for their consultants.

One highlight of Original Travel’s new collection is their philanthropic holidays, known as “philantourism.” These itineraries allow travelers to make a positive impact by supporting local communities and economies. For example, their Sri Lanka trip focuses on staying at family-owned guesthouses, engaging with local culture, and participating in activities that benefit the community.

Conclusion

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced the way we travel. As we enter 2022, travelers are prioritizing sustainability, community engagement, and more meaningful experiences. Luxury rail travel is gaining popularity, offering unique journeys with breathtaking views. Original Travel’s “Travel Less, Travel Better” collection reflects a shift towards responsible and philanthropic travel.
