I reckon the early markets have missed 7 Hurdwick Stone (Bet Now:
$SP.00
). Son of Tavistock for Busuttin/Young that has had three career outings, all of which have come at Pakenham, and the last two have been eye catching. Latest run was over the mile when badly held up late when wanting to build the revs. Blinkers first time, Nash on, up to 1700m…great each way bet to start the meeting.

Danger

3 Cotton Tree (Bet Now: $4.60) looks an improving type for Price/Kent and should appreciate getting to 1700m. He debuted over 1500m at Geelong where he was a bit one paced when initially asked for the effort but he picked up nearer the inside and was pretty good late in the piece behind Hiyaam Proud. Good upside to come and up to 1700m, he commands respect.

Long Shot

5 Eyes To Me (Bet Now: $18.00) comes back to 1700m, which I find interesting. His last couple of runs have come at 2000m+, the latest being over 2200m at Geelong where he was in a decent spot near the speed before getting shuffled back and lost all hope in a forgive. Dangerous if the inside gate can be used to advantage.

Race 2. (11:50) Bottle-O Warrnambool Mdn Plate 1700m

12 Engeline (Bet Now: $4.20) gets the nod in what looks an open race. Nick Ryan trained mare that has finished runner up in two of her three runs this time in, the latest coming over 1400m at Pakenham last time when back from the mile and she closed off with purpose late, just failing to see it through when second to Tishman. Back up in trip, should get decent cover and be strong late.

Danger

2 Black Peppermint (Bet Now: $2.90) will love getting to 1700m. Patrick Payne trains this five year old, who debuted over 1450m at Kyneton and he was one of the eye catchers of the meeting, closing off strongly to run second, with a big gap to third. Quiet tick over trial last week but will eat up the extra ground and is a key threat.

Long Shot

7 Pressure Cooker (Bet Now: $19.00) is a knockout hope. Son of Adelaide for Henry Dwyer that resumed over 1300m at Geelong where he got back to last in the run and while he was never a winning threat, his finale was more than sound I thought. He is a horse who will get to 2000m+ in time but the stable loves this Carnival so watch the market.

Race 3. (12:20) Rafferty’s Tavern Hcp 1200m

Back Me

10 Guerite (Bet Now: $10.00) is drawn tricky but I reckon she has talent and is worth a throw at the stumps each way. Lindsey Smith has a strong hand in the race but I reckon this girl will more than hold her own. This filly has won both her jumpouts, her latest jumpout being a win at Terang where she was off the speed and seemingly had an apprentice on, but what I liked is that she safely held them and was strong to/through the line. She’s the each way speck.

Danger

4 La Pleine Lune (Bet Now: $6.00) is a well bred colt for Team Hayes that is on debut. He comes here off the back of a jumpout win at Flemington where he ran decent enough time and seemingly moved nicely to my eye. Maps to get a nice run and stable finds Nash to steer. Likeable for sure.

Long Shot

1 Denial (Bet Now:
$SP.00
) has a horror gate to overcome but he has race experience on his side, which should hold him in really good stead here. He debuted over 1000m on Terang Cup Day where he got into a nice spot behind the speed and presented to be dangerous but just couldn’t quite see it through when second to Symphony Of Colour. If he can overcome the draw, he’ll be around the mark.

Race 4. (12:55) Victory Dunroe Stpl (Bm120) 3450m

Back Me

I am all over 1 The Rattlin Bog (Bet Now: $12.00) here for Aaron Purcell. This gelding comes here off the back of a plain effort at Ballarat where he was a bit one paced when asked for the effort. He has been given a mini freshen up and I thought his trial here was one of the better efforts of the session. Surprised he is double figures, loves the track…great price I feel.

Danger

2 Duke Of Bedford (Bet Now: $2.45) is a beauty for Andrew Bobbin and commands respect. He has won two from three this time in, the latest run being a dominant win in a Ballarat Steeple when near the speed before taking the front and got better as the race went on. Very quiet trial here in readiness and with his recent runs, he is one of the leading chances.

Long Shot

3 Not Usual Dream (Bet Now: $9.50) is an improving type for Rachael Cunningham. He ran third at Pakenham last time when back in the run and while he was never really a winning threat, he did work to the line with purpose when third to Budd Fox. He’ll be strong late…knockout hope I feel.

Race 5. (13:30) Billy ‘The Butcher’ Malady Mdn Plate 1400m

Back Me

9 Ti Tree Lad (Bet Now: $3.30) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Mitch Freedman trained gelding that resumed over 1200m at Caulfield Heath where he just looked in need of the run and while he was never a winning threat, his finale was sound enough in defeat. Maps to get a sweet run in transit, gets J Allen, good upside…happy to have him on top.

Danger

4 Montecristo (Bet Now: $6.00) is a son of Ocean Park for Matty Williams that resumes. This guy is first up after debuting at Hamilton back on Dec 12 when near the speed and was there to win the race but he couldn’t quite get the job done when third to Seacryption in what looks a strong form race. Jumped out well leading, stable loves this Carnival…hard to beat.

Long Shot

2 Bellonado (Bet Now: $11.00) is one I can entertain at odds as a winning chance. He hasn’t raced since debuting on Ararat Cup Day back in November where he got back off the speed and worked home with purpose to run third in a good effort. Given a good break, liked his recent jumpout at Terang and 1400m fresh tells me there is intent.

Race 6. (14:05) Galleywood Hrdl 3200m

Back Me

3 Bedford (Bet Now:
$SP.00
) looks to have a bit on these I feel. Team Freedman trained gelding that stamped himself as a potential top hurdler last season and here he is lining up in a big hurdle race. Couple of flat runs under the belt to get ready for this along with strong trial work over the jumps. If he does everything right, I think he wins.

Danger

10 The Mighty Spar (Bet Now: $8.00) can bounce back. Mark Walker trained galloper that was backed with confidence when racing in a Pakenham hurdle last time and I thought he was a touch disappointing, seemingly having every chance when fourth to El Diez. That was his first run since arriving from New Zealand so with improvement to come, he rates highly.

Long Shot

8 Sky Hero (Bet Now: $18.00) is a knockout hope for Amy McDonald. He was an outsider when resuming over 2600m at Cranbourne but he let down with purpose and bloused them late for a surprising but impressive win. Tick over jumps trial was good and while he lacks the class, he looks to have come back in outstanding order.

Race 7. (14:45) Sinclair Wilson (Bm70) 1000m

Imagine what you could be buying instead.

Back Me

6 Bifrost (Bet Now: $10.00) looks a good each way gamble at odds for Team Browne. He ran on Mornington Cup Day last time over 1000m where he got too far back in the run and while he did make up good ground behind Fasuto, he was never threatening. If he can settle closer in the run, he’ll take holding out.

Danger

12 Just Watch Me (Bet Now: $3.70) is a daughter of Deep Field for Lindsey Smith that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since Sep 25 over 1400m here when on speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish the race off behind Silent Scream, and did pull up lame in the process. Interesting she resumes without a jumpout but trained on the track and J Kah booked, that is enough intent on paper for me to say she’s hard to beat.

Long Shot

4 Zourata (Bet Now:
$SP.00
) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. Just looked in need of the run fresh at Caulfield Heath before going to 1100m at Kyneton when on speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through and felt the pinch late. His best is good enough and this isn’t an overly deep race.

Race 8. (15:20) Wangoom Hcp 1200m

Back Me

5 Frankie Pinot (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Wangoom specialist having won the race two years ago and placing in the race last year. He comes back to 1200m after racing in the Golden Mile at Bendigo where he was as brave as ever but just didn’t quite see out the mile behind El Soleado. He’ll love a fast run 1200m and is really well in at the weights I feel.

Danger

13 Midtown Boss (Bet Now: $4.00) is a talented sprinter for Matt Laurie that appeals as a key chance. He ran a few weeks ago down the straight at Flemington where he looked a good thing on paper and under a confident steer from Zahra, he made a mess of them and was quite dominant late in the piece. Good test here, but confident he measures up.

Long Shot

4 It’sourtime (Bet Now: $20.00) is capable. He resumed with a down the track effort in the Newmarket before going to the Country Discovery at Yarra Valley where he got back to near last in the run and did make up ground without threatening. He likely gets back again, but hopefully gets a drag into the race and can launch at them late.

Race 9. (16:00) Pryde’s Easifeed (Bm64) 1700m

Back Me

2 Glamdam (Bet Now: $14.00) looks to be in for a good prep and seems a big price here I feel. This mare resumed over the mile at Pakenham where she got back to near last and was never a winning factor but I really liked the way she finished her race off behind Smokin Princess. Fitter and up in trip, depth not as deep, she’s worth an each way bet.

Danger

8 Armstrong Bay (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented animal for Symon Wilde that rates highly. Let down with purpose from off the speed to win at Ararat two back before going to Terang Cup Day where he got back to near last in the run and was never a factor but did make up solid headway late in the piece. If he can overcome the gate, he’ll be around the mark.

Long Shot

1 Unfair Dismissal (Bet Now: $21.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. Just looked in need of the run fresh at Yarra Valley before going to Sandown when back in the run and did make up some headway but was never really a factor behind Vail Mountain. Hard fit, can settle forward and has good upside.

Race 10. (16:30) The Whalers Hotel (Bm70) 1400m

Imagine what you could be buying instead.

Back Me

9 Jabbawockeez (Bet Now: $4.20) is the straight bat option in the get out. Team Hayes trained gelding that resumed over 1400m at Caulfield Heath where he got a fair way out of his ground but I really liked the way he finished his race off late in the piece behind Jucconi, just missing out on the win. Good upside and he brings strong form lines. Happy to have him on top.

Danger

4 Electric Impulse (Bet Now: $6.00) will land on speed and prove hard to get past. She resumed over 1300m at Bendigo where she attempted to lead throughout and gave a decent kick but couldn’t quite see it through when third to Brazen Lady. Good racing style, fitter and will love a bit of juice in the ground.

Long Shot

15 Hell Hound (Bet Now: $10.00) is dangerous with her best. Bit on the plain side at Sandown last time but I just think the track was too firm for her when down the track behind Splash Back. Bit of juice in the track here, and at her best, she is city class, so I am not penning her.
