BETS between drivers and their bosses have become a fun theme over the years in global motorsport.

Perhaps most memorable was then Renault Formula 1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul being forced to get a special tattoo after Daniel Ricciardo delivered the team a podium (ultimately twice) in 2020.

McLaren Racing CEO and Walkinshaw Andretti United co-owner Zak Brown has been another regular candidate for such a wager.

Ricciardo’s victory in the 2021 Italian Grand Prix in fact saw Brown also get a tattoo, as well as hand the Australian an opportunity to drive an ex-Dale Earnhardt NASCAR.

Brown also ended up promising Chaz Mostert a steer of an ex-Allan Moffat Chevrolet Monza following his 2021 Bathurst 1000 win for WAU.

Now, there’s a new deal to note, involving Kiwi young gun Callum Hedge and former IndyCar team owner Steve Horne.

Horne manages Hedge, who is a 2023 championship contender in both Porsche Carrera Cup Australia and the Formula Regional Americas Championship.

“I’ve made a deal with Steve, that if I win a championship this year, Steve has to buy and wear a pair of crocs,” said Hedge.

“I reckon he’d look pretty good in them!”

Horne, whose Tasman Motorsports Group outfit won multiple CART races, is embracing the bet involving the divisive footwear.

“Over the years I have offered all sorts of incentives for drivers I have worked with from meals at good restaurants, hard cash, upgrades on flights but this must be the most unique one,” he said.

“I hope I get to wear them!”

Hedge’s next event is Round 4 of the Formula Regional Americas Championship at New Jersey Motorsport Park on July 28-30.

He holds a 25-point lead in that series, and is second in Carrera Cup, just 20 points adrift of leader Jackson Walls.
