The state government in May gave September 1 as the date by which all exterior gambling signs had to be taken down across the state.
But if you spot a sign still up, don’t assume it’s outright defiance – pubs and clubs that can demonstrate issues outside their control that prevent the removal of a sign by today have an extra three months to get it done.
After that, the government warned in May, there would be a “zero tolerance” approach – and they have encouraged Australians to notify them about rule-breakers.
Phrases now banned include VIP Room, VIP Lounge, Golden Room/Lounge, Players’ Room/Lounge, and Prosperity Room/Lounge, along with images of “dragons, coins, or lightning motifs”.
“Let me be clear, if you have gambling-related external signage after September 1 and cannot demonstrate that reasonable steps have been taken to remove it, you will be fined,” Gaming Minister David Harris said last week.
“I’m also calling on the community to help us enforce this ban.
“If you see a sign which may breach the guidelines after September 1, please report to Liquor and Gaming NSW who will investigate further.”
The maximum penalty for a breach is $11,000.
